Why you’ll love this creamy seafood soup
My family loves this crab loaded, seafood soup because it’s full of buttery, creamy flavor. It’s the perfect comfort food.
Can I have crab on the keto diet?
Is crab low carb and keto friendly? Yes. Seafood is naturally carb-free.
One can of crab meat has no carbs! That’s right! None. Nada.
How do I make low carb creamy crab soup?
This low-carb and keto friendly crab bisque is so easy to make and inspired by Martha Stewart’s shrimp Bisque.
- First, you’ll start with a roux-type of base for the soup. I like to use almond flour and butter to begin. In many traditional soups, you’ll see a flour and butter base, but this one doesn’t have all those nasty carbs!
- Next, add in your dairy: half and half, cream cheese, and heavy whipping cream.
- Finally, add in the crab and seasonings to the mix.
What seasonings can I add to crab soup?
I like to use dried chives, Old Bay Seasoning and Tony’s Creole seasoning.
If you don’t have Tony’s or chives, you may use fresh onions, onion powder, or garlic powder to substitute those ingredients.
Just give it a little taste-test to determine your preferences of flavor.
Can I use canned crab to make crab soup/bisque?
I have to admit, I was really skeptical about using canned crab for this recipe.
However, it was all I had on hand.
To be perfectly honest, I wanted a fast crab soup that tasted like lobster bisque, but without all the fuss and long list of ingredients.
This soup is simple, yet full of flavor, just like lobster bisque.
Can I freeze crab soup?
I do not recommend freezing this soup because of all the dairy.
How long will seafood stew last in the fridge?
Crab soup will last up to 3 days in the refrigerator. If you’re unsure, just sniff and you’ll definitely know!
What are crab substitutions?
No crab? No problem! For this recipe, you may use imitation crab, canned or the real deal.
No crab? You can use canned chicken and peppers for a delicious creamy chicken pepper stew.
Leftover crab? Make a cajun seafood foil pack right in the oven!

Just finished a bowl and OMG, it was fantastic! This is the most simple recipe for such a great tasting soup. I had a container of lump crab that I was planning to make crab cakes with but came across this recipe and thought it seemed way to easy not to try it. This soup does not disappoint! It is noted that it makes 10 servings but I ate two ladles full as one serving so I am estimating this will be more like 5-6 servings. Thank you for the great recipe, I will definitely be making it again, an maybe even adding some extra seafood since it is nice and thick like a chowder.

Can I freeze this soup?
lowcarbquick
Hi Darlene,
because of the cream cheese, I do not recommend freezing. Thanks for stopping by!

Mine wasn’t thick. Taste is great though
lowcarbquick
To thicken, you may add more crab or a bit of Xanthan gum.

All I can say is yummyyyyyyy!

Hello! I only have heavy whipping cream so could I dilute that with water for the half and half? We don’t do any kind of milk since we are keto. I have everything else and can’t wait to make this! Thank you!
lowcarbquick
Hi Lori,
I believe that would work. I have also found success using almond milk to dilute heavy cream. Thanks so much for stopping by! -Amber

@Lori, I also will not add 1/2 and 1/2 d/t keto. I used the balance of water, with “better than lobster” base, and some dry cooking sherry…………….ummmmmmmmmmmm good
Jaci
This soup is delicious!! But I am VERY confused on the carb count? Every source I’ve looked into for the carb count says crab meat is very high in carbs?? This article says there’s 0 and I can’t find anywhere that agrees with that as much as I WANT it to be true!!??
Tia
Meats don’t generally have carbs in them. Some seafoods (like shrimp, clams, oysters, squid) have carbs, but they are very low in carbs still. Crab does not have carbs. You might be looking at imitation crab, which is definitely high in carbs.
Jaci
Nevermind my comment about the high carbs. I was using imitation and that’s the difference. Thank you for the delicious recipe!

@Jaci, I made this tonight (as mentioned above, with no 1/2 and 1/2) and I used 1 can crab meat (which is a small amount) so I took 2 frozen pieces of cod filet, put that in there until it cooked until flaky and brought them back out, and cut them and flaked them……………YOU CAN NOT TELL IT IS NOT CRAB. DELISH

lowcarbquick
Hi Debbie! I have updated the recipe to reflect the serving size. Thanks so much for stopping by!
Patty
Looks great and am going to make it tonight and way…but, when I entered the recipe into my tracker as Serving 8(which is how it is on Pintrest and how it printed)
The numbers came out as
CARB 8
CAL 399 ?
lowcarbquick
Hello Patty, I have ran this recipe through my ingredient calculator in my recipe plugin after updating again. It is showing 5 g. carbs and 366 calories for each of 8 total servings. I’m not sure why Pinterest is showing anything different, it must be pulling outdated data from the old servings. The plugin I use to calculate nutritional info is through Word Press Recipe Maker, which is the gold standard for food and content bloggers. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I will be looking more closely at Pins to insure they are properly updated when I update a recipe.

If I don’t have heavy whipping cream, can I just use a pint of half and half or condensed milk?
Amber @ Low Carb Quick
You can, or I would recommend cream cheese for more creaminess in that case. Thanks for stopping by, Hannah!
